THE ESSENTIAL –TION ENDING
Among the various commandments, there are some that do not deserve mention. These are - do not use “that”
do not use “which” and
“use nouns sparingly.”
A borderline commandment is do not use -tion endings (or “I hate rap singers.”).
What the Dubious Advisors really mean is do not use the suffix ion but perhaps they thought you might not know what a suffix s. But let us explore – “tion” and examine the words we dare not use.
intention communication celebration elevation administration election retention prevention
invention detention radiation decoration
appreciation negotiation imagination emotion
elation lactation induction graduation
civilization execution extortion examination
medication vacation inspection infection
etc.
We mentioned the Law of Unintended Consequences. Well, by eliminating words with the suffix –ion (or “-tion’) we also eliminate words that describe or denote ideas, science and the very essence of mankind. Like civilization, exploration, exploitation and medication. What ideas or images do words like the following present: infection, vaccination, medication, prevention, radiation?
Make up your own list. Language is not something to be dismissed on a whim by people who do not understand it.
1 - Imagine not being able to put up a decoration for the celebration of a kid’s graduation.
2 - Are we allowed to give medication to women who have begun lactation after they have a baby?
3 - Does this mean we can’t discuss the prevention of STDs?
4 - What are we going to do about communication when it comes to radiation?
5 – For some people a vacation in Denver is out because the elevation makes them sick.
